Sundrop Fruit Juices Bhd.

Was formerly known as Green Spot (Borneo) Bhd is one of the oldest beverage manufacturers in Malaysia.

Green Spot (Borneo) Bhd. was set up in December 1957, during the time Sarawak was a Crown Colony of Britain.

Originally, the Company manufactured a range of fruit juice drinks, including orange juice, under licence from Green Spot International from Pasadena, USA.  The plant was designed and set up with American technology and was the most advanced at the time.

For the first time, Malaysians were able to enjoy preservative free natural fruit juice which was stable at ambient temperature.  In the decades that followed, Green Spot became a household name in Malaysia and Green Spot Orange a premium product.

In 1983, the management of Green Spot (Borneo) Bhd. decided that the Franchise Agreement with Green Spot International restricted the Company’s growth.  New products and export to overseas markets by the Company needed the approval of Green Spot International which was often not forthcoming.  A decision was reached to end ties with Green Spot International and go our own way in developing new products and new technologies.

The first product was Sundrop Orange Juice which was a replacement for Green Spot Orange.  Development of this product was done in cooperation with major orange juice producers in California, USA, as well as Florida, USA.  Sundrop Orange was launched in 1987, in returnable bottles and was very successful.  Following Sundrop Orange, other juices like Lime Juice was developed, based on the local lime, Limau Kasturi. Using local fruit, a NFC (Not From Concentrate) product could be manufactured with superior quality.  This too was very successful, especially in the export market.

In 1992, returnable bottles were phased out and replaced with cans.  At that time, tin plated 3-piece cans were used for non-carbonated drinks because of the rigidity, and soft aluminium cans were used only for carbonated drinks.  Unfortunately, tin plated cans rusted easily and the tinplate reacted unfavourably when in contact with juices; so Sundrop Fruit Juices Sdn. Bhd. brought in the first aluminium cans for fruit juices, pressurised with liquid nitrogen in 1993.  Liquid nitrogen turned into gaseous nitrogen when injected in aluminium cans, expanding up to 700 times the volume of the liquid nitrogen droplet, and pressuring the cans.  Unlike carbon dioxide, nitrogen is not soluble in liquid, hence, we would achieve rigidity for aluminium cans without having a carbonated product. However, the technology came with caveats, the main one being that liquid nitrogen must be kept at an ultra low temperature of -196 ℃ and injected into the cans.  We had to incorporate cryogenic (ultra low temperatures) liquid handling system in order to use this method.  But the final product used aluminium cans, which had far fewer defects than tinplate cans, did not rust, and had superior taste characteristics when in contact with liquid beverages.  Following our successful launch, other beverage manufacturers followed and today, aluminium cans and not tinplate cans are the standard for non-carbonated drinks.

In 1995, Sundrop developed the first ready to drink milk and black coffee, being the first local manufacturer to do so.  The first batch of milk coffee manufactured by Sundrop used instant coffee, similar to other beverage manufacturers and powdered non-dairy creamers.

In Year 1992,

returnable bottles were phased out and replaced with cans. In Year 1995,

Sundrop developed the first ready to drink milk and black coffee, being the first local manufacturer to do so. The first batch of milk coffee manufactured by Sundrop used instant coffee, similar to other beverage manufacturers and powdered non-dairy creamers.

However, it was soon evident that instant coffee did not give a product consistent with our high expectations and a decision was made to switch to freshly roasted coffee. Local coffee roasters could only provide the local ‘burnt’ coffee which was not suitable for canned coffee.
It was discovered that the burnt sugar reacted unfavourably with other coffee ingredients. A decision was made to use advanced coffee roasters which gave a very even roast without any burnt coffee beans. This machine was designed with input from coffee roasters in the United States and a fully automated coffee roaster was installed in 2000.

In Year 2010,

it became evident that healthy beverages are the trend of the future, and creamers loaded with transfat are not the way to go. Sundrop then developed creamers suitable for coffee and tea which are transfat free and this was incorporated into our products in 2014.

Teh tarik was introduced in 2005. Like coffee, it was soon evident that instant tea did not make a suitable product and a decision was made to switch to fresh brewed tea.

Along with coffee, a suitable brewing and extraction system for fresh coffee and fresh tea was designed. Today, our brewing and extraction system can brew and extract up to 4,000 litres of coffee and tea per hour.

Today, Sundrop Fruit Juices
